Border Collies are herding dogs, whose origin country is the United Kingdom. These sturdy medium-sized working dogs are considered the smartest sheepdogs. They are widely used to work sheep and cattle by farmers and shepherds. Border Collies are hardy, strong and sometimes even restless. They are always on the go.
Well-balanced body with a muscular loin, large chest and relatively short muzzle suggest stamina and endurance. The coat can be either long or short, but always dense. Because the Border Collie is initially meant to be a working dog, there is no definite appearance breed standard. Therefore, Border Collies can have black and white coat color, which is nevertheless most preferable, yellow and white, merle and tricolor.
Border Collies Rescues - Why You May Need to Reconsider
Though Border Collies excel in competitions and trials and are truly devoted to their owner, their reputation of family pets is somewhat ambiguous. Their herding instinct, if they are not satisfied, can be a problem. However, in most cases it is successfully turned to flyball, agility, obedience and other dog sports.
If great deal of time training and exercising is not spent on a Border Collie, it will try to find some substitute to these activities. There are all chances that the ineraction will not be enjoyable. A bored Border would undoubtedly apply its energy to something mischievous like spoiling your furniture, chewing things, digging, barking, etc.
Border Collies need spacious yards, which must be fenced to limit their curiosity and energy.
Border Collies Rescues - History
Old-fashioned Collie, Farm Collie, English Collie and Working Collie are the names the breed was known by, as far back as 1570s. It was James Reid, Secretary of the International Sheepdog Society in Great Britain, who called the breed the Border Collie. It happened in1915. The first trial was held in Wales in 1873. The US started the practice of trials in 1880.
Border Collies originated on the border between Scotland and England. The word Collie may be tracked to the Gaelic one, which means "useful," or to the word of German origin meaning "worker."
The modern Collie is believed to descend from the shepherd's dogs that were brought to England by the Romans and the Celts in the 5th century AD. Modern Border Collies are offspring of legendary Old Hemp, unsurpassed in trials.
